Thiruvananthapuram , formerly known as Trivandrum, is the capital and the largest city of the Indian state of Kerala. It is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland. Referred to by Mahatma Gandhi as the “Evergreen city of India”, it is classified as a Tier-II city by the Government of India. Check out below some weekend getaway places.

1. Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam in Kerala, India. It is famous for its backwater tourism. Several luxury and budget resorts lined up on the shores of the lake provide tourists with facilities for boating, yachting and fishing with panoramic views of the lake. The other major attraction is the Bird Sanctuary and best time to visit sanctuary is morning and evening.

2. Ponmudi

Ponmudi is a hill station in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala in India. It is located 55.2 km north-east of Trivandrum city. Ponmudi is blessed with scenic splendor and natural beauty, Ponmudi has a carpet of thick tropical forest that rolls down to the foot of the hill range. Trivandrum serves as a base for trekking and hiking. There are also tea gardens in the area. There are 22 hairpin curves in the short route which makes the travel a definitely thrilling experience.

3. Thenmala

Thenmala is a tourist place near Punalur town in Kerala. Thenmala is the first planned eco-tourism destination in India. Thenmala is famous for being the shooting location in Malayalam and Tamil movies. Thenmala attracts foreign and domestic tourists with a host of attractions like Boating on the lake, a rope bridge, trekking, mountaineering, biking and a musical fountain.

4. Varkala

Varkala Beach also known as Papanasam beach is a beach in Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. The word Papanasam means wash away sins. It is believed that a dip in the waters of Papanasam Beach washes away all the sins in one’s life. Varkala beach is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. The beach is a haven for sun-bathing and swimming. The evening views of the sunset are worth lingering over.

5. Peermade

Peermade is a hill station in the state of Kerala, India. It lies 915 metres above sea level in the Western Ghats. The landscape of Peermade includes spectacular waterfalls, open grass lands and pine forests. It has herds of elephants and other wildlife as well as lakes. The town got its name from Peer Mohammad who was a Sufi saint. The area is extremely wide of coffee, tea, cardamon and coconut plantations.
